One ambition of the Reformation of 1517 was to make God’s Word available to the public in the language of the common man—English. The first English translations were banned by the Roman Church and most copies destroyed. An English translation of the Bible threatened the Church’s control over people’s interpretation of Scripture, and those found in possession of these Bibles risked burning at the stake.

In 1604, Protestant clergy approached King James I, and announced their desire for a new translation of the Bible. This “translation to end all translations” was the combined effort of over 50 scholars who considered six different English versions. From 1605 to 1609, the scholars researched and assembled the work. In 1610 the work went to press, and in 1611 the first of the pulpit folios known as “The King James Bible” came off the printing press. It became the most printed book in the history of the world.
